Constraints as Generative Principles

The lunar environment subjects the project to radical constraints: absence of atmosphere, permanent radiation, extreme thermal variations of ±280°C, gravity reduced to 1/6 of Earth's, a day/night cycle of 14 Earth days. Each of these data points, far from being an obstacle to minimise, becomes a generative principle of the architectural project.

The need to protect against radiation requires the partial burial of structures or their covering with regolith. This constraint produces an architecture that is largely underground, with habitable volumes nested within the thickness of the lunar soil. The topography of the implantation crater thus becomes both a formal and protective resource.

Creating a Pleasant Living Environment

The central objective of the project is to create a pleasant living environment, in harmony with a high-technology universe. This is not a contradiction: high-tech architecture can be beautiful, luminous, generous in space. Current space stations suffer from a cramped austerity that harms the psychological balance of occupants over the long term.

The lunar base proposed here integrates from its conception spaces for relaxation, interior gardens, views of the lunar landscape and Earth, places for meeting and intimacy. Architectural quality is not a luxury — it is a physiological and psychological necessity for residents isolated for months.

Expressing a New Era

Beyond the functional, this project carries a symbolic ambition: to architecturally express the historical dimension of a new industrial and spatial era. The forms, materials and spatial organisation must bear witness to the moment when humanity began to build beyond its planet of origin.

Lunar architecture inherits from research conducted by pioneers such as Jacques Rougerie for underwater habitats, or Buckminster Fuller for geodesic structures. It distinguishes itself through the scale of constraints and the radical simplicity to which it is subjected. Everything that is not essential must be justified; everything that is retained takes on amplified value.

"The lunar architect does not have the luxury of the arbitrary. Every spatial decision is justified by a physical constraint — which, paradoxically, liberates a great formal rigour."
